COMMONWEAL SUBSCRIBER ZIPCODES
There are about 165 Commonweal subscribers
within a 30 mile radius of downtown Cleveland. The twenty people who have
attended one or more of our meetings are spread around the whole metropolitan area and beyond. No matter
what location we could choose to meet, about a third of our members are going to be more than
20 miles away as the crow flies. That means a 30 to 40 minute drive back and forth to the meeting location.
In the past year we had between 5 and 10 people at a meeting. Dividing the group into two will not
work. About four locations (East, West, somewhere near John
Carrol, and Akron) are needed to have reasonable distances. That means about 50 total members to
have reasonably sized small groups of between 8 and 16 people.
We will have to reach out to non-subscribers to
get fifty members which is a good idea; however starting with as many subscribers as possible is also a good idea. Hence the reason for providing this information to all subscribers to considerable the possibility of having a group meeting near them.
How to use
the information below.
Zipcodes are about mail delivery routes not
geographical areas. So one Zipcode may be in two different cities. I have collapsed the data into geographical and zipcode
categories.
Find nearby cities and Zipcodes to see how many subscribers are near you. In the case of Lake County* there are thirteen subscribers including
myself. That would make a nice small group if everyone would be available. More likely one is going to recruit a group of an optimum size (e.g.
8 -16 people) by attracting some subscribers and some non-subscribers. Personal recruitment by existing members is always a good way of increasing the social glue of small group.
Think
about your area, and ways and a location you might use to attract non-subscribers as well as subscribers. Begin by inviting some of your friends. Think of needs that you might meet besides location, e.g. day of the week other than Monday, choosing topics from the Conversational Starter Series rather than recent issues. Maybe there are subscribers who are interested in food and/or drink or who would like to meet in a home. The fact that the original group did not find these attractive does not mean others will not. One of our members just wants a social group that does not discuss articles.
If you want to help start a group or would like to join a certain type of group, send an e-mail to me, Jack
Rakosky, at jarakosky@gmail.com. I will try to connect people and/or set up a post on this blog with your interests. Better yet join our present group for additional support in meeting your desire for a Commonweal group near you, or one that caters to your interests.
You may be aided in finding nearby Zip codes from the Cuyahoga County map here. To the right side of the map are links to the city/town maps within the county. I have used the map to fill in some areas in the table below (followed by a ? mark to indicate there is not a perfect overlap).
