Meeting
Time and Format
Commonweal send out an E-mail on October 11th inviting readers in the Cleveland area to come to our October Meeting. How much time we spend becoming acquainted or reacquainted will depend upon how many new people show up.
At the last meeting it was suggested that we have prayer at our meetings, and that the responsibility for leading the prayer be rotated among members. We will become more acquainted by sharing what forms of prayer we have experienced, what we found helpful or unhelpful. Then we will try taking a more expansive and deeper view of prayer, e.g. finding God in all things. All this should be helpful context as we shape the prayer/contemplative aspect of future meetings.
7:00 - 7:15 pm The first reading, canticle, and canticle prayer from:
A Service of Nine Lessons and Canticles for Childermas
GOD'S PREFERENTIAL LOVE FOR CHILDREN
GOD'S PREFERENTIAL LOVE FOR CHILDREN
Inspired by the Feast of the Holy Innocents (Childermas) and the sexual abuse scandal, the theme of this service is God's preferential love for children. Check out link above for an overview.
7:15 - 8:15 pm Discussion of the following articles:
‘What Can You Do?’ Understanding Sinful Social
Structures
By
Daniel K. Finn September 20, 2018
Time to Leave? Damon Linker, Sexual Abuse, and the
Church
By
Paul Baumann
We will use the Finn article on understanding social structures and how they may be characterized as sinful to understand how social structure in the Church promote clericalism in both the clergy and the laity.
See the following post for an overview, links, and suggested questions:
8:15 pm. Topic for the November 26th Meeting: check out the conference at Baldwin Wallace, and the various Merton links at Commonweal in the post below. Lynn will be returning from her retreat a Merton's monastery on the day of our meeting. With all these resources, Merton is the obvious choice for our November meeting
The room is
available until 9:00pm when the church closes. There are many eating places in
the area for those who might wish to socialize afterwards.
General Information
We welcome subscribers, readers and friends of Commonweal to our meetings. However we ask you to preregister by sending an E-mail to Jack Rakosky at jarakosky@gmail.com.
Participants are expected to have read the material, and the group does a good job of staying on the topic. There is plenty of time before and after the discussion period to talk about many things.
The eleven topics of the first year where suggested by a total of seven people. We choose the topic for the next meeting at the end each meeting. The group has been very good at affirming suggestions.
If you wish to discuss an article in Commonweal come to a meeting, and suggest it for the next meeting. Below is a post which lists the topics for the first year. Remember, however, if you are not a subscriber that clicking on any of the links will count as one of your free 5 articles for the month!
